Abstract

The paper develops a weak-coupling mechanism for stabilizing two-dimensional altermagnetism using coincident Van Hove singularities that are protected by non-symmorphic symmetries. A patch-model analysis shows that, in contrast to cuprate- and graphene-like settings, coincident Van Hove singularities can support an additional symmetry-allowed hopping interaction that can drive altermagnetism, nematicity, interband d-wave superconductivity, and orbital altermagnetic order. The theory is then applied to the quasi-2D organic compound κ-Cl, where the authors argue that the relevant Van Hove singularity consists of a coincident pair at the same momentum and energy.
