Abstract

We study topological effects in a one-dimensional plasmonic crystal formed by screened plasmons emerging in a periodically modulated graphene sheet placed on top of a metallic substrate. The work develops a theory of quantization of screened plasmons for lossless graphene described by a Drude conductivity, analyzes the resulting band structure, shows that the crystal sustains nontrivial topological bands with quantized geometric phase, and demonstrates edge states in a finite open system that undergo a topological phase transition as modulation increases.
