A method for the synthesis of molybdenum sulfide foam comprising: providing a combination of precursors, the precursors comprising molybdenum sulfide powder, ammonium tetrathiomolybdate, a g ellin g a g ent and a pol y me r drying the combination of precursors to form a film; and heating the film to generate the molybdenum sulfide foam.
4 The method of claim 3, wherein the heating takes place in a nitrogen gas atmosphere.
The method of claim 3, wherein the pjeetwsers polymer comprises at least one of 1apente, PVOH, polvethyleneoxide, sulfonated pol y s ty rene, polyacrylic acid, or polyacrylamide.
The method of claim 3, wherein the gelling agent is one of laponite, montmorillonite or

Synthesis of MoS₂ foam using a bottom-up approach. MoS₂ powder (~10 g) and ATTM powder (~0.15 g) were mixed in ~50 g deionized water and sonicated for 1 hour. PVOH polymer solution (100 g, 7.4% by mass) was added and stirred for 1 day. Laponite clay (3 g) was added, stirred for 10 min, then dried in a fume hood for several days. The dry film was calcined in a tube furnace under nitrogen gas: first heated at 4 °C/min to 20–80 °C, held at 80 °C for 20 min, then heated at 10 °C/min to 950 °C, held for 30 min. The resulting MoS₂ foam was tested for adsorption of dibenzothiophene (DBT) from toluene solutions (100 and 1000 ppm concentrations).
Materials described outside the worked examples.
