A method of making a porous three-dimensional graphene mesh, the method comprising: combining a graphene-containing material and polyethylene glycol (PEG) having a molecular weight between 6000 daltons and 8000 daltons in an alcohol solvent to form a mixture, wherein the alcohol solvent is methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, or pentanol; adding sodium chloride (NaCl) to the mixture such that the ratio of graphene-containing material to NaCl is 1:12 or greater; heating the mixture to form a gel to a temperature between about 60 ° C and about 85 ° C for between about 1 hour and about 36 hours; and washing the gel with water to remove the NaCl from the gel leaving behind stable pores to form a scaffold having a porosity between about 50 % and about 90 % and an average pore size between about 5 p m and about 50 pm.
